We watched the live webcast of the ALA Youth Media Awards today in class. Other than a few clearly YA moments in a room full of fifth graders, it was awesome. There was SO much clapping for Kadir Nelson's biography of Nelson Mandela. Since reading
We Are The Ship they have become major fans of Kadir Nelson. It's so fun to see them turned on to nonfiction authors.
Most students saw a book or five to add to their personal TBR lists. Of course, I had to run to the bookstore after school to buy a copy of
Mr.Wuffles! Everyone is vying to be the first to read it. Hehe.
The coolest part was just seeing how excited they were. The awards made books and reading seem like something worth celebrating. While we already have that feeling in our classroom, it was empowering to see other people have so much enthusiasm for books.
Congratulations to
all the winners!
