Top Ten Tuesday - Waiting for Sequels!

The topic of this week's Top Ten Tuesday post grabbed my attention, so I figured that it's the perfect prompt for my inaugural entry. Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.

Top Ten Sequels I Can't Wait to Get My Hands On

10. Spirit Animals 2: Hunted by Maggie Stiefvater
My students really enjoyed the first book, Wild Born by Brandon Mull, so I'm really looking forward to the release of Book 2 in January. It will also be my first Maggie Stiefvater book *hanging my head in shame*

9. Aliens on a Rampage by Clete Barrett Smith
The first book, Aliens on Vacation, is about a bed and breakfast for aliens that are visiting Earth. However, we humans don't know about the many other planets out there so our alien visitors have to disguise themselves as humans. Ridiculous fun ensues. I actually already have Book 2, and I have one student who has read it already. He thought it was even better than the first book so I'm eager to read it.

8. The Magician by Michael Scott
This is the second book following The Alchemyst. I loved the many mythologies of The Alchemyst and Book 2 has been sitting on my TBR shelf for over a year!

7. The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner
I didn't love the first book, The Thief, but Book 2, The Queen of Attolia, was AMAZING. There was so much intrigue and double-agent-spy-craziness. I might just be hooked on this series. I'll be grabbing this one from the library soon.

6. Amulet 4: The Last Council by Kazu Kibuishi
I have been trying to get my hands on this for weeks, but my students are passing it back and forth among themselves so I'll have to wait a while. We all agree that the first book is confusing, but that Book 2 really makes up for it and creates a fantastic and gripping story.

5. The Shadow Throne by Jennifer Nielsen
This is the third book in The False Prince series. I really enjoy the realistic/historical fantasy setting of these novels. They are slightly medieval and there's plenty of castle-intrigue... which apparently is something I enjoy. This one comes out in February.

4. Chupacabra (Cryptid Hunters 3) by Roland Smith
I've called this series "Awesome, but Little-Known." The first book, Cryptid Hunters, is exciting and well-crafted. Two kids travel to Africa with their uncle in search of a mythical creature. In Book 2, Tentacles, they search for the Kraken. I love how these books include a villain who exemplifies the problem of science being used solely for fame and fortune, rather than increased knowledge and conservation.

3. The Fire Chronicle by John Stephens
I recently read the first book, The Emerald Atlas, and I've been working on a review because it was fantastic. Spoiler alert -- 5 stars! -- In this trilogy three siblings discover a book that uses photographs for time travel. They encounter all manner of dwarves and witches, and ultimately embark on a quest to find and protect three powerful books.

2. Cress by Marissa Meyer
In the last few months I have devoured both Cinder and Scarlet. I love the way Marissa Meyer blends traditional fairy tales into science fiction. I love playing hide & seek with the fairy tale elements, but the futuristic plot is even more engrossing. Who can resist cyborgs, mutants, and mind-control? Cress is due out for publication in February and is built around the story of Rapunzel.

And the #1 Sequel I'm Waiting For?
The Battle for WondLa by Tony DiTerlizzi
I was first drawn to this series by its incredible artwork, but this epic science fiction trilogy is captivating all around. DiTerlizzi has crafted a fascinating world populated by a smorgasbord of alien characters and a precocious female protagonist. Unfortunately May 2014 is a long long LONG time to wait for this trilogy's conclusion. My reviews are at: The Search for WondLa (Book 1) and A Hero for WondLa (book 2).

I surprised myself by how much I loved the first 2 books - I'm not usually into sci-fi fantasy - but this one snuck under my radar.

    1. They surprised me, too! I think the artwork is what grabbed me, first. And then those characters... DiTerlizzi is so creative! Reading his books is like being surround by a painter's master work.
